Some paranormal terminology...
Apparition --- A spectral image resembling a human being. These images may be opaque, translucent, or shadowy in appearance.
Aura --- An emanation of light (seen or unseen) that surrounds a person or object, often thought to be a reflection of a person’s personality.
Clairvoyance --- Having the ability to see (in the form of mental imagery and intuition) events or entities that cannot be perceived by the senses.
Collective Apparition --- A type of paranormal sighting where multiple individuals see the same apparition or phenomena.
Demon --- A being or entity often spoken of in religious text as pure evil.
Earthbound --- refers to a spirit that is unable to cross over to the other side at the time of death and remains on earth.
EVP: (Electronic Voice Phenomena)--- Ethereal sounds and voices that are captured on electronic media that are not heard at the time of recording, but upon playback. According to the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena EVP’s can be classified as follows:
Class A: The message can be heard without headphones and people generally agree on which words were spoken.
Class B: This classification usually requires careful listening thru headphones to be able to discern the message content, and not everyone will always agree on what is spoken.
Class C: Requires headphones and often amplification and filtering to be able to understand, and the words still may not be completely discernable.
EMF Detector (magnetometer, gauss meter) --- instrument used to measure the strength and direction of an electronic and/or magnetic field (also called a magnetometer or gauss meter)
Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) --- perception and communication without use of the physical senses.
Exorcism --- removal or banishment of an entity(ies) thought to possess or haunt a location or human.
Ghost --- an apparition or entity that is thought to be a deceased human's spirit/soul.
Haunting --- The repeated activity or manifestations of supernatural phenomena in a specific location. These manifestations include but are not limited to: cold spots, phantom odors, unexplained sounds or voices, physical apparitions, or materializations.
Intelligent Haunting --- A haunting that involves alleged activity of contact from intelligent or conscious spirit energy. Also described as a personality of one who has died that attempts to make its’ presence known through personal interaction.
Manifestation --- The sudden or prolonged appearance of images or sounds that are created without logic or explanation.
Materialization --- The sudden appearance of an object or apparition that occurs in front of witnesses or that is recorded and identified as supernatural.
Medium --- an individual who professes to be able communicate with spirits or can act as an intermediary between the world of the living and the dead.
Orbs ---Round or oblong luminous objects that are observed, videoed or photographed. Orb activity is believed to be dust, moisture, or flying insects that reflect natural or artificial light.
Paranormal --- A word meaning unknown or beyond the normal.
Parapsychology --- the study of evidence relating to psychological phenomena .
Poltergeist --- Literal translation from German meaning a noisy ghost. They are believed to be more destructive than human ghosts. The term is used to identify paranormal activity that includes the moving of heavy objects, knocking and rapping, apparitions, and violent interactions. (more recent theory suggests that poltergeist activity, at least in some instances, may be subconscious energy manifestations emanated by an adolescent agent).
Provoke (provoking) --- to try and draw out or encourage an entity to communicate or materialize by means of making it angry.
Psychic --- person who can detect psychic forces, having above average ESP abilities.
Residual Haunting --- type a haunting in which the paranormal activity/entity/energy replays over and over like a movie, this type of activity does not interact with individuals (also known as an anniversary ghost/haunting).
Séance --- gathering of individuals, generally lead by a medium, to communication with non-living entities.
Supernatural --- of or relating to existence outside the natural world, unlike paranormal, the term "supernatural" often refers to divine or demonic involvement.
White Noise --- acoustical or electrical noise with an intensity that is the same at all frequencies within a given band.
